Brief history
The Department of Ophthalmology was established in 1946, based on the Ophthalmology Unit of the Republican Clinical Hospital, which at the time had 40 beds.
The first head of the department was university professor, Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences IVAN KURLOV, under whose leadership many valuable ophthalmologists were trained. During the years 1959-1965, associate professor APOLON DOBROMISLOV was at the helm of the department, who founded the first pediatric ophthalmologist’s office which was also recording strabismus cases in children in the Republic of Moldova.
Year 2018
In 2018, the Department of Ophthalmology was divided. A new department was created - OPHTHALMOLOGY-OPTOMETRY - at the base located at Sfanta Treime Municipal Clinical Hospital public health institution (with Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences professor Valeriu CUȘNIR as head of Ophthalmology-Optometry Department).
Currently, the Department of Ophthalmology (headed by Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences professor Eugen BENDELIC) , with its clinical base at the Republican Clinical Hospital public health institution, consists of 9 academic staff members (3 of them are also employees of the Republican Clinical Hospital); Associate professor Gheorghe Ivanov is at the clinical base of OVISUS Medical Center.

Prof. Eugeniu BENDELIC
Since 2000 and until now, professor Eugen BENDELIC, Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences, has been at the helm of the Ophthalmology Department.
Currently, at the Ophthalmology Department based at the Republican Clinical Hospital public health institution, studies are conducted in 4 languages: Romanian, Russian, French and English. Modern presentation methods are used based on a rich iconography, taken from specialized local and foreign literature. The internships focus on practical aspects of case studies, students being trained in examining patients, discussing cases related to etiopathogenetic, clinical and therapeutic aspects at the patient's bedside.
Moreover, the university clinic has an important role in the education and professional training of resident doctors, who are university scholarship holders and hospital employees.
Collaborators of the department ensure the diagnostic-curative and consultative needs of the university clinic, providing innovative specialized care in eye diseases, usually in the most difficult cases.
Today the clinic has a capacity of 60 beds, modern diagnostic and treatment equipment, but also professional intellectual potential.
Year 1978
Associate professor Vladimir BOIȘTEANU
Between 1978-1986, the head of the department was a distinguished organizer of ophthalmological care in the Republic of Moldova, an innovator Emeritus and a tenacious scientist - associate professor Dr. Dumitru LUPAN.
He was succeeded by Habilitated Doctor of medical sciences, Professor Zinaida TITARENCO, a doctor specializing in the treatment of corneal diseases, who led the department from 1986 to 1997.
Between 1997-2000, the department was chaired by associate professor Dr. Vladimir BOIŞTEANU, specialist in the treatment of the pathology of eyeball appendages, author of the first local ophthalmology textbook.
During his activity, several remarkable scientists, ophthalmic surgeons, who contributed to the improvement of ophthalmological care in the Republic of Moldova, worked at the department. Among them were well-known names including: Teodor Gâţu, P. Litvac, Pantelei Goncear, Liubovi Fastoveţ, Ion Bobu, Zoia Papşeva and others.
Year 1965
The staff of the Ophthalmology Department and Ophthalmology Unit, 1970-1975
For more than a decade (1965-1978) the department was chaired by associate professor, Dr. Liubovi MIKRIUCOVA, who actively engaged in the fight against trachoma in Moldova. In 1977, with the transfer of the Republican Clinical Hospital to a new building, the department moved to the same location together with the Ophthalmology unit, the capacity of the clinic being extended to 80 beds.
